Fish & Chips and a Cliff Walk – 1 Hour from Dublin

An easy seaside escape, just an hour from Dublin.

If the sun’s out and you’re craving good fish and chips, a quiet walk, or maybe even a swim , this little place might be just what you need.

About an hour’s drive from Dublin, past Drogheda, you’ll find Clogherhead, a small town on Ireland’s east coast. It’s laid-back, local, and perfect for a simple day out by the sea.

FISH & CHIPS AT THE PORT

There’s a fish and chip truck down at the port called Fisherman’s Catch . Proper fish and chips crispy batter, straight from the sea into the pan. The kind that flakes apart the second you touch it with your fork. To be quiet honest, when the fish is this fresh, you don’t need any sauce, just a bit of lemon, salt, and vinegar, and you’re sorted. The chips? Big, thick, proper chippers style.
They’ve even got a fish shop right next to the truck where you can grab fresh fish or oysters if you’re into that (I am).

They take card and cash. Just a heads up if you’re paying by card, you’ll need to go into the shop. They’ve got some wooden benches for seating, but honestly… when there’s a cliff right there with sea views?
Just grab your food, sit by the edge, watch the waves crash and enjoy your feed.

CLIFF WALK

Once you’re done eating, time for a little stroll. Next to the truck, you’ll actually spot the start of the walk right by the cliffs. It’s a pretty easy hike, though a bit rocky in parts with a few big steps to mind. I did the whole thing in about 40 minutes. The walk brings you down to a beach at the bottom of the cliff, perfect for a swim if you’re feeling it. Plenty of pubs nearby and even a bus stop if you’re not driving.

TIPS & EXTRAS

  • If I were doing it again, I’d park near the beach and walk to the port maybe 30 minutes or so.
  • Then you’ve got your walk to the port, your cliff hike (40 mins) and your swim. Perfect little half-day trip.
  • There’s a public toilet near the start of the walk, just near the wooden bench.
